Garage Door Won't Open or Won't Close? Read This Before You Force It
Before anything else: if the door is stuck and something is under it, do not stand there. Doors that are already faulty are exactly the ones that drop.
Won't open
The opener hums but nothing moves
Broken spring or stripped opener gear. Pull the release cord and try lifting by hand. If it is enormously heavy, that is your spring.
Nothing at all happens
Power. Check the GFCI outlet, the breaker, and whether the wall button works when the remote does not.
It rises an inch and stops
Either the up-limit is set wrong, the door is binding in a bent track, or the manual slide lock is still engaged. That last one catches people out more often than you would think — check both sides of the door for a locking bar.
It opens crooked or jams
A cable has slipped a drum or the door has come off its track. Stop cycling it. Every attempt bends more track and damages more panels.
Won't close
It starts down then reverses immediately
Safety sensors. Clean the lenses, realign them, check for a damaged wire. This is the single most common "my door is broken" call.
It reverses just before hitting the floor
Down-limit or down-force setting, or an obstruction like a loose track roller or a raised bottom seal.
It closes but bounces back up
Something is triggering the obstruction detection — often ice-free but debris-filled track, sometimes the down-force set too tight for a stiff door.
It closes and leaves a gap
Uneven floor, worn bottom seal, or the door is out of level because one cable has stretched.
If the car is stuck inside
- Pull the emergency release cord (the red handle) to disconnect the opener.
- Try to lift by hand. If the door is balanced, it will lift with moderate effort.
- If it is heavy or lifts crooked, stop. A door with a broken spring or slack cable can come down hard.
- Call for emergency service rather than propping the door with anything.
Do not do these
- Do not hold the wall button down to "push through" a jam
- Do not disconnect or tape over the safety sensors to force a close
- Do not try to lever a door back onto its track with a crowbar
- Do not park under a partly open door, even for a minute
